IN LOVING MEMORY OF KANDA MICHELLE JACOBS

KANDA'S EARLY YEARS

You were a gorgeous baby. Born three weeks early, you were only
18 inches long and weighed 6 pounds and l ounce. You were tiny but
you had a head full of dark brown hair that had even grown an inch on
your neck. What tiny hands and feet you had. The smallest baby shoes
I could find were still too large for your feet. Your face was so round
with huge cheeks which we always called the Jacobs'Jaws, a trait on your
Dad's side of the family. What a joy you were, our first born on May 24th,
1973 at St Joseph Hospital in Joliet, Illinois.

What a gorgeous baby you were with your beautiful round full face. I remember
your 1st birthday as if it were yesterday and I really believe I was more excited
then you. Baking not one but two cakes was a blast and I could not wait to see
what you would do with an entire cake all for yourself. You squeezed it,smeared
it in your hair and on your face and finally figured out that it really tasted good
and sweet. What a relief that you had already torn into your gifts because you
had to be completely stripped and bathed from your head to your toes. Your high
chair had to be washed down in the bath tub since it was just plastered with icing
and cake. PRAISE GOD FOR MEMORIES! Since we lost our Kanda Michelle, our
memories and pictures of her from early childhood to adulthood are so very precious
and healing.

I believe if you were ask what kind of childhood you had, you would have said it was
fine, maybe not wonderful, but it was a normal childhood with support from us, your
parents, in any activity you chose to participate in. Looking at these pictures, especially
the portrait of your dad, you as a baby and me, it is just unbelievable how quickly the
years have flown by.

When you were four years old, to your disappointment, a brother was born instead
of a sister, but as the years passed by, you accepted your disappointment very well.
Of course we felt we had the perfect family. As in any family, sibling rivalry was a
constant nuisance at our home. But eventually both of you grew up and began a
more down to earth sister/brother relation ship. We considered ourselves very fortunate
as parents to have had such good kids, meaning we never had any major problems
such as drugs or alcohol related incidents. We were so very proud of you and your
brother, Jerrin.  Both of you had very good work ethics and were very self supportive.
What more could parents ask for?

You were raised about 5 miles out of the city limits of Flora, Illinois so you only
had a few neighborhood children with whom to play. One of my favorite pictures
is the one in which you, neighborhood friend, Kerry King are each holding a cat and
your bro(as you called him) had wiggled in between for the snap shot. Even here your
 love for animals is obvious.

You started your cheeleading career early in life at the age
of 7 as one of the mascot cheerleaders for the Junior High Football Team. You are
the youngest in the front with the short hair cut.

On Easter, Grandma Helen
cousin Teresa Wilkins and you to Golden Methodist Church only
2 miles north of your childhood home place. In selecting pictures, I especially like
the one of you smelling the flowers right before you left for church that morning.

Grandma Jacobs was very faithful and attended church every Sunday as in the
picture of Grandmother, Jerrin and you ready to go to church another Sunday,
all dressed up, Jerrin in suit and tie.

I felt so very fortunate to have also located a picture of you and Jerrin with your maternalggrandparents, Tony and Mildred Bryan. I believe this portrait was a
Christmas picture with Jerrin wearing his Sailor Suit.

Going with Christmas again, are Jerrin, in a green and white sweater, and
you with a new doll at our neighbor's home, Art and Elma Hough. Both of
you were treated as grandchildren in their home. They were very kind and
considerate neighbors.

In 1985, we took a vacation and visited close friends, Bill and Elsie Asbury
, their daughters, Julie and Susie in Jacksboro, Tennessee. While visiting with
them, we also took in the grand tour of Gatlinburg. From the skylift picture and
the huge grin on your face, I would say your were having a great time. I am not
 too sure about me.

Jerrin, our neighbor Elma Hough, your best girlfriend, Christy Rutland and
you are posing for a shot in the Hough home. From the poinsettias on the
table, you were again drinking hot chocolate, and eating homemade cookies
and candy and decorating for Christmas.

A very old friend of mine from the Joliet area visited with us in the the
middle 80's. I am saddened that I have lost all contact with Patty Lutz as
she has moved and remarried. In the picture, I am hiding behind everyone,
Patty is the taller one with her hand on Jerrin's head and, of course, you are
 standing to my right.

I have tried to bring your childhood to life again as I, your mother, have tried
to describe many of your chilhood memories. If only our family could go back
and take the time to smell the roses and be thankful for every day we had with
 each other.

Any picture that has a strip of paper in print is Kanda's actual printing as she
had posted many notes on her pictures in her photo album. In this section,
notice the strip on theSouthern Illinois Softball picture marked '83.
